Description:
The ventricular system is a network of interconnected cavities within the brain that produces, circulates, and contains cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). It consists of four main ventricles: two lateral ventricles (one in each cerebral hemisphere), the third ventricle located in the midline between the two halves of the thalamus, and the fourth ventricle situated between the brainstem and the cerebellum. These ventricles are connected by narrow passageways—the interventricular foramina, cerebral aqueduct, and central canal—allowing CSF to flow through and around the brain and spinal cord. The CSF cushions the brain, removes waste, and maintains a stable environment for neural tissue.
This graphic was created to be an educational introduction to the flow of CSF throughout the central nervous system, using a self portrait as the human subject in which to transpose the anatomical structures on.
